Roanoke Rapids Sanitary District is performing water distribution flushing throughout the system now to June 30th as part of the District’s ongoing water quality maintenance program.
The flushing program serves two important functions. First, it minimizes the build-up of mineral and other sediments, that over time can affect water quality and water flow through the pipes. Secondly, it allows the Sanitary District to verify the fire hydrants and valves are working properly and available for fire protection. Check your water for clarity before use. It is not uncommon for flushing to temporarily cause water to come out of the faucet cloudy (entrained air) and/or discolored (iron and manganese). This does not represent a health hazard, and opening an outdoor spigot or cold water faucet in the bathtub for a few minutes should result in clearer water. If allowed to stand in a clear clean glass, cloudy water should clear up without requiring flushing within a few minutes. If cloudy or discolored water resists for more than a few (typically less than five) minutes, please contact us using the information below.
Flushing will take place between the hours of 9:00 A.M. and 4:00 P.M., Monday through Friday. The water mains will be flushed by opening fire hydrants for a brief period. The District will begin by working from the filter plant and systematically flush outward to the ends of the lines. Local access will be maintained during most of the work.
Your cooperation during this procedure is appreciated. If you have any questions or require additional information, please contact us (252) 537-9137.
